When you think of peak stress times on the calendar, you might think about the holidays first, and you wouldn’t be wrong. However, one month in particular – August – brings a sneaky kind of stress in which people find themselves just trying to “get through it” in hopes of cooler temperatures and slower schedules around the corner.

Why Can August Be So Stressful?

  • Many regions endure the hottest temperatures of the year, or the “dog days” of summer. This affects temperaments and health but also vehicles and homes (appliances work harder and roof shingles can become brittle). Not to mention wildfire risks under extreme heat conditions.
  • End of the year deadlines are creeping up at work, which can affect moods and relationships at work and home. Finding ways to unplug and detach are crucial. A boat or an RV are great recreational items to help you unwind and your Shelter agent can help discuss coverage options for them. Also consider taking a Road Trip with your family or friends to get away for a while.
  • School is preparing to start back up and parents and students find themselves with shifting schedules and budgets to accommodate the changes. Do you have a Time Management Plan for your family? You can both get back into the swing of things by Helping Your Kids Set Goals for the new school year and beyond.
  • Many first-time college students are leaving the nest and the transition can be hard for the parents and the student. You may both have questions about what this change will mean for their insurance coverage while in college.
  • With temperatures and temperaments being hotter than usual, it should come as no surprise that according to the National Safety Council (NSC), August is one of the months for the highest number of auto accidents (alongside July and October). Use Defensive Driving tactics to help keep yourself safe. It’s also important to understand your auto insurance coverage limits. If you do have an accident, stay calm and refer to these instructions for What to Do After an Accident.

With all this potential stress, the last thing you should worry about is your insurance. With Shelter, you have the benefit of a hands-on Agent at your side to guide you through your coverage needs. Stay safe out there, slow down and speak with your Shelter Agent about what auto, home and life coverage options are right for you.
