Tonya Moore joins Shelter Mutual Insurance Company Board of Directors

06/24/2020

Dr Tonya MooreCOLUMBIA, MO - Dr. Tonya Moore, Founder and CEO of MooreNow, LLC – a leadership coaching consulting firm, and immediate-past Executive Director of Leadership and Workforce Development for the University of Mississippi Medical Center, was elected to the Shelter Mutual Insurance Company Board of Directors, as announced by Chair of the Board, Rick Means. The Board will welcome Dr. Moore at the Company’s September Board meeting.  Dr. Moore was elected at the April meeting of the Board of Directors, and her service begins July 1, 2020.

“We believe Dr. Moore’s expertise will be extremely helpful to Shelter’s future growth and success,” said Mr. Means. “Her healthcare knowledge is critical not only for our life insurance company, but also helping with the health and well-being of our more than 4,000 agents and employees.”

With nearly twenty-five years of experience at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in various roles, Dr. Moore brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this board role.  Her volunteer work throughout her career will match well with Shelter’s ongoing commitment to volunteerism.  Dr. Moore is currently serving as the president of the Mississippi Nurses Association, and is the first African-American elected to that office.

Dr. Moore studied nursing research and earned her doctorate at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Nursing from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and she earned her Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Alcorn State University, a Historically Black College and University.  Dr. Moore received the University of Alabama-Birmingham Nursing Alumni award in 2019 as well as the American Health Council’s Best in Nursing award in 2017.

Dr. Moore received the prestigious Myrlie Evers-Williams Minority Health Leader Award in 2019.  Evers-Williams is the widow of late civil rights leader Medgar Evers.  Dr. Moore’s grandfather Charles was Medgar Evers’ older brother and a civil rights leader as well.  She credits her grandfather with helping her build an interest in developing leadership qualities.

Matt Moore, Shelter’s President and CEO, said Dr. Moore brings unique experience to Shelter’s Board, “Dr. Moore brings much-needed perspectives to the Board, and many years of leadership development experience that I know will help Shelter in the years to come.”

“Shelter’s demonstrated commitment to quality, customer-centered service and progressive growth in the insurance industry were compelling reasons for my desire to serve as a member of the Board,” said Dr. Moore.  “This organization is providing financial security for so many families during both good and challenging times.  I am privileged to join this amazing team and I embrace the opportunity to help advance the strategic initiatives of Shelter Insurance®.”

The Shelter Insurance® Board began the search process in November, 2019 when current Director Andres Jimenez announced his retirement from the board.  A lengthy review of qualified candidates ensued and Dr. Moore was selected from that group to fill Mr. Jimenez’ remaining term on the Shelter Board.  Directors serve three year terms which can be renewed and are subject to policyholder approval because of Shelter’s mutual insurance company status.
