Shelter Insurance® Response to the Coronavirus

Shelter Insurance® Provides Assistance to Personal Auto Insurance Customers
The Shelter Insurance® group of companies was among the first to take the stance of continuing coverage when a customer could not pay their premium, and now Shelter, including its subsidiaries AmShield Insurance®, Haulers Insurance®, and Say Insurance®, will join others in our industry in finding ways to provide relief to our customers who insure their personal autos with us.
Many of our customers are under unprecedented stay-at-home orders and social-distancing mandates, so they are driving fewer miles and experiencing fewer accidents. In the interest of providing help to our customers now, when they need it most, Shelter will issue a payment to our policyholders representing approximately 30% of their personal auto monthly premium for the months of April and May, based on our best estimate of the impact of this pandemic on our customers and on Shelter’s business.
We will work diligently to obtain approval from the Departments of Insurance in each state we serve to get this money into our customers’ hands as quickly as possible. If a customer paid their premium automatically through a bank account, we will deposit directly into the account when possible. Otherwise, we will mail a check.
Shelter is known for doing the right thing. We will continue to evaluate this rapidly evolving situation and do what we can to help our customers, agents, and employees.
Shelter Insurance® leadership are reviewing the ongoing impact that COVID-19 will have on our business. Shelter was among the first to take a stance on lapsed and cancelled policies during this pandemic. We are providing relief to individuals who have lost their jobs or otherwise been negatively impacted by the crisis.
We continue to evaluate this rapidly evolving situation and will do what we can to help our customers, agents and employees. We are evaluating options based on our current experience in this pandemic and how the results will impact our insureds. This is consistent with our practice of doing the right thing for our nearly 75 year history. In the next few days, we will have more information and appreciate your patience.
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Shelter Insurance® employees’ health and safety is of the utmost importance. It is also our civic duty to take steps to help keep our communities safe. Shelter is implementing new policies and procedures in response to the evolving coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. As of March 13, 2020, Shelter is encouraging employees who have the ability to work from home to do so. This means the Home Office and Branch locations will be operating with significantly fewer employees on site. At this time there are no confirmed COVID-19 cases of employees at any of our locations.
In addition, we have taken the following steps, among others, to protect our employees, agents and customers:
- Non-essential business travel remains suspended. Employees are encouraged to use precaution for any personal travel as well.
- In-person meetings of five or more individuals are suspended; employees should use virtual meetings instead.
- Visits to Shelter Offices from outside vendors remain suspended.
- We will continue our enhanced cleaning and disinfectant applications of our worksites.
Shelter is continuing to work toward accommodating employees to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
Throughout this situation, Shelter remains steadfastly committed to serving our customers' needs and keeping our business running as usual. We greatly appreciate the support of our customers, employees and agents, and the communities in which we live and work.
