Share the Harvest Program Weighs in Heavy to Help Fight Hunger

03/18/2016

COLUMBIA, MO – Each year since 1992, the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Conservation Federation of Missouri team up for Share the Harvest, a program that encourages hunters to donate deer meat to their local food banks, and sponsors help cover the cost of processing the deer meat. Shelter Insurance® is one of the founding sponsors of the processing payback portion of this program.  Shelter provides cash sponsorship and offers printing support for the program's processing slips.

Through the program, hunters can donate venison, and the process is easy. They simply take their deer to one of the 100 participating meat processors in the state who will package the meat and take it to local food banks for distribution. In 2015, more than 4,500 hunters donated 228,306 pounds of venison. This feeds more than 46,000 people.1

In addition to helping feed the hungry in Missouri, the program helps keep the deer population at a manageable level. Shelter President and CEO Rick Means said, "There's really no down side to this program. It helps control the deer population, which means there will be fewer deer on the roads to cause accidents, and it helps feed the hungry in Missouri."
