Auto Insurance FAQ: Rental Cars

Image:

Your trip could go from good to awesome if your rental car gets upgraded to a sweet ride free of charge. Unfortunately, you can’t count on that happening, but Shelter’s auto insurance policy may come along for the ride if you are involved in an accident in a rental car.

In general, our liability coverage applies to your rental car if:

• It's a car that neither you nor any resident of your house owns.

• You have a written agreement with the rental company.

• You don't rent longer than 30 days.

Note: Other limitations or exclusions may apply, so please speak with your Shelter agent.

What's Your Responsibility? Liability Bodily Injury and Property Damage
If you cause an accident while you're driving your rental and someone is injured or someone's property is damaged, you could be held legally responsible for their injuries, recoverable expenses, and the repairs to the property. Our liability, bodily injury and property, coverage options will help pay others' medical bills and property damage you cause. It will also defend you if you get sued for causing the accident.

It's All Good: Collision and Comprehensive Insurance
Say your vacation in wine country is during a particularly rainy season. Maybe you cause a fender-bender driving on the flooded streets – or maybe your rental car suffers major water damage. Our optional collision insurance will help repair or replace your car, even if you didn't cause the accident. With our comprehensive insurance you can help protect your rental car beyond just collisions – from fire, theft, hail, and yes, flood damage. Both collision and comprehensive coverage options require a deductible that you choose when you buy the policy.

Depending on the rental car contract and its requirements, the rental company may have some coverage options that are not available through your Shelter auto policy.

Want to just enjoy the ride in your rental car? Ask your Shelter agent to help you review your current coverage before you hit the road.
