Tips for Removing Trees and Debris After a Storm
Storms season is here and after a storm there are usually trees, limbs, and other debris all over the yard. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when clearing your yard after a storm:
Safety Should Always Come First
While you want to clean the mess quickly, working too fast or taking on jobs that are too big can cause injuries. Remember to take your time and if the job is too big, contact a local tree removal specialist.
Avoid Creating Even Bigger Problems
Take a close look at the debris and make sure that there are no downed power lines or other hazards. Due the amount of water a tree can hold, it can be a great conductor and you risk being electrocuted if you touch it. If you see downed lines, contact your power company as soon as possible.
Equip Yourself
When operating a chainsaw or other power tools, always use proper safety equipment including: a safety helmet, eye and ear protection, gloves and safety chaps. Familiarize yourself with the safety precautions for each tool you use.
Learn the Basics
Before you start:
- Make sure the tree is safe to cut.
- Determine what kind of stress the tree is under (check to see if it is twisted, caught on something, etc.).
- Determine what direction the tree may fall and make sure the path is clear.
- Removing the tree:
- Start near the top but never make cuts with a chainsaw that are over chest high.
- Work your way to the base removing all the limbs as you go.
- Stand on the opposite side of the trunk when removing limbs because the trunk offers added safety from the chain and any possible kick back.
- Clear fallen limbs in your work area before you continue trimming up the rest of the tree.
- When cutting up the trunk and large branches, keep the length and size manageable so that you can easily dispose of the debris.
Make Plans for Final Removal
Before you haul any debris to the curb for the city to remove, find out if they will remove it or if you'll need to contact a local service.
