Enjoy Your Ride With Shelter By Your Side
There's nothing like the feel of the open road on a motorcycle—the sense of freedom, the wind in your face, the bugs in your teeth…well, maybe not that. A windshield or a helmet with a visor can help shield you from bugs and other hazards, but how will you protect your assets if you have an accident? Motorcycle insurance can help.
What's Included
Liability — Bodily Injury
These days, there are more distractions for drivers than ever, and this is no different for motorcycle riders. If you cause an accident that causes someone else to get hurt, you could be legally required to pay for their pain and suffering and their medical expenses related to the accident. Bodily injury liability coverage will help pay for this as well as defense fees, court costs, or bail bond if legal action is taken.
Most states require motorcyclists to carry a certain amount of liability coverage at a minimum, which can be pretty low and may not be enough to cover damage from an accident. Shelter offers various limits To help protect your assets, we recommend purchasing the highest amount of coverage you can afford.
Liability — Property Damage
You're a new rider, and even though you've taken the safety course to get a discount on your insurance, you somehow drove through the garage door at a friend's house. Nobody got hurt, but you may be held legally responsible for the cost of repairs or replacement of the garage door. Property damage liability coverage can help pay for these expenses, as long as the property isn't owned by you or a member of your household. This is why it's required in most states and included in Shelter's motorcycle coverage.
Roadside Assistance
A broken-down bike makes for a bad day. We hope it doesn't happen to you, but if you find yourself out there with a flat tire, a dead battery or similar situation that leaves you stranded, our Roadside Assistance service can help. It's available 24/7 and pays for services up to $100 per incident. Just one call and help will be on the way!
What's Optional
Collision
Collision coverage is different from property damage liability coverage. In the example above of hitting your friend's garage door, liability coverage will help you cover the cost of fixing the garage door, but it won't help you fix any damage done to your motorcycle. Collision coverage will help you fix or replace your motorcycle due to an accident, whether you were at fault or not.
You can choose a deductible amount for collision coverage. We will pay either the comparable value or the cost of the repair. Although collision coverage is optional, if your motorcycle is financed or leased, the lender might require you to carry the coverage.
Comprehensive
What if you parked your motorcycle at the mall, and despite your best efforts to secure it, someone stole your sweet ride? What if your house caught on fire and your bike was damaged? What if hail or falling objects damaged your custom paint job? Or what if your bike was damaged in a flood? Comprehensive coverage may help you pay to repair or replace your motorcycle for most causes not covered by collision coverage. (There are a few causes of loss are that are excluded, so you should read your policy and discuss the coverage with your agent.)
Our comprehensive coverage pays to repair or replace damaged auto glass, like that on your motorcycle's windshield (if it has one). If repairs are made before small chips or cracks can grow, there is no deductible and we pay the entire repair bill. If a break in your windshield is large enough to require replacement, or there are more than two chips, a deductible may apply.
You can choose a deductible amount for comprehensive coverage. Losses will be paid at either the comparable value or the cost to repair. Although comprehensive coverage is optional, if your motorcycle is financed or leased, the lender might require you to carry the coverage.
Medical Payments
Motorcyclists are more likely to be injured or killed in an accident because they lack the protection provided by enclosed vehicles. Injuries can leave you with mounting medical bills, but medical payments coverage can help pay the costs if the injuries are the result of a covered loss. Some of these costs include ambulance rides, hospital bills, doctor visits, x-rays, surgery and—even though nobody likes to think about it—funeral expenses.
Although medical payments coverage is not required for motorcyclists in most states, you can see why it's a good idea to have it.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist – Bodily Injury
Liability insurance is required by law. Regardless, there are some who drive without it, and some who only carry the minimum amount required by law—which sometimes isn't enough. If these drivers cause an accident and you're hurt, there may not be enough—if any—money to cover your resulting medical expenses. That's why uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage exists. It can help pay medical or funeral expenses for you, most relatives living in your household, or anyone driving your car with your permission. This coverage applies if:
- The other driver was at fault and did not have current insurance, or
- The other driver's available liability insurance limits are less than the full amount owed for your damages.
Uninsured Motorist – Property Damage
Uninsured motorist property damage can help pay to repair or replace your motorcycle if it is damaged in an accident and the at-fault driver doesn't have current insurance.
Disability Income
Sometimes injuries from a traffic accident are severe enough to prevent you from being able to go to work. Disability income coverage may provide you with a weekly stipend for a certain amount for up to one year if you are disabled and unable to work as the result of a traffic accident. Coverage may apply if you're riding your motorcycle or struck by another vehicle. Disability coverage may not be available in some states, but you may be able to purchase similar personal injury protection coverage.
Personal Injury Protection (No Fault)
Similar to disability income coverage, personal injury protection (PIP), also called no-fault coverage, is designed to help you deal with the expense and inconvenience of being injured in a covered accident. In addition to routine medical expenses, PIP coverage may help cover some loss of income and some additional expenses paid for services the injured person normally provided to your family like lawn care, housekeeping and more.
Some states require PIP coverage for all vehicle owners. In other states, PIP is not available. Talk to a local Shelter agent to see what your state requires.
Customization
Customization coverage applies to equipment that is installed and permanently attached to your motorcycle. This may include modifications or attachments such as bolt-on chrome, alternate exhaust systems and hard luggage.
To get customization coverage, you must also have comprehensive or collision coverage. When adding comprehensive or collision coverage, your bike is automatically covered for up to $5,000 with no additional premium. If you need coverage above $5,000, talk to your local Shelter agent.
Motorcycle Riding Equipment
The Motorcycle Riding Equipment option covers trailers, sidecars, and safety equipment that are specifically intended for use with a motorcycle or recreational motor motorcycle. Trailers eligible for this coverage must be primarily designed for transporting motorcycles or recreational motor motorcycles, or to be pulled behind a motorcycle or recreational motor motorcycle. You can add this coverage if you've purchased both comprehensive and collision coverage. Limits above $15,000 are available. If you need those limits, see your local Shelter agent.
