When it comes to getting out on the water, Shelter gives you the coverage options to ease your mind. Our policy offers a variety of options designed to help protect your boat or personal watercraft – and your passengers.

We also have one of the best replacement coverage options available, which doesn't even require you to be the original owner of the craft.

Required Coverage

Liability – Bodily Injury and Property Damage

If you cause an accident that injures someone else, you could be held legally responsible for their expenses (this is also true if you've given another person permission to use your boat). Liability coverage will help pay their medical bills. It can even help with your defense fees, court costs or bail bond if legal action is taken.

By the same token, if you cause an accident that damages another person's property, liability coverage can help pay for these expenses.

Shelter offers limits of liability up to $1,000,000.

Medical Payments

With ambulance fees, hospital bills, follow-up doctor visits, and x-ray or surgery costs, even fairly minor injuries can quickly become expensive. Medical payments coverage can help pay reasonable medical and dental bills incurred in a covered loss. And though no one likes to think about it, coverage for funeral expenses is included.

Most states do not require you to buy medical payments coverage.

Optional Coverage

Physical Damage

Physical damage coverage helps pay for the repair or replacement of your boat, motor, trailer, or other listed boat equipment due to accidental damage. If repairs need to be made to protect your boat from further damage or loss, Shelter will pay the reasonable cost for such repairs. Also, if you are required to remove or destroy a wrecked boat, Shelter will pay the reasonable cost to do so (provided the loss is covered).

Shelter offers replacement coverage for boats and personal watercraft up to two years old, even if you aren't the original owner.

Personal Property/Boating Equipment

$1,000 of coverage is included on all policies with physical damage coverage. Higher limits are available.

Emergency Service Reimbursement

If your boat or other covered equipment becomes disabled while boating, emergency service coverage will reimburse your reasonable towing and on-site labor costs, up to $500.

Uninsured/Underinsured

Uninsured/underinsured coverage can help pay for medical expenses if you are hurt by someone who doesn't have – or doesn't have enough – insurance coverage.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

Accidental death and dismemberment coverage can help pay for accidental injuries or death while boating, water skiing, swimming or participating in similar water sports.
