Claims Central

When someone purchases insurance, they don’t expect to make a claim. Any claim, large or small, can be stressful, but hopefully information about how the process works can ease your concerns.

Shelter’s team of claims adjusters is ready to assist with your claim. Whether you’re a Shelter customer or not, we are proud of our award-winning customer service.

Reporting your claim is easy. Simply call 1-800-SHELTER (1-800-743-5837) or file online. Shelter customers who have a My Shelter account can file there as well.

Shelter’s Claims Process

Ever wonder how the claims process works? Probably not, unless or until you have a claim. Our main goal is to settle claims efficiently to cause minimal disruption to your life.

Here's how it works:

You file your claim.
Whatever type of claim you have, it’s important that you file it as soon as possible after the damage occurs so we can assign a Claims Adjuster and they can contact you.

The Claims Adjuster reviews the claim.
To determine coverage and ensure the correct amount is paid, they must first review the claim and the terms of your policy. Once coverage is established, the adjuster will determine the amount of your damages.

The Claims Adjuster evaluates repair estimates.
At this stage, our Claims Adjusters review the facts of the case as well as repair estimates. If you have obtained your own estimates, you can submit those at this time. You should also submit receipts for any costs you incur that you may be reimbursed for, depending on the terms of your policy. (For example, if you have to have a tree removed from your roof to mitigate further damage, or if you need to stay in a hotel because your house became unlivable due to a fire.)

Close.
When the claim has been settled, it can be closed.

Filing a claim of any kind means you have had a stressful and potentially life-changing situation, so we hope you never need to know this process. However, if you do have to file a claim, we hope this information will be helpful.
