Our Most Talked About Programs

Health Insurance: Our competitive plan provides full-time employees with medical, dental and prescription drug coverage after 30 days of employment and voluntary vision coverage on the first of the month following 30 days of employment. This coverage is also available for the employee's spouse and children.

Savings and Profit Sharing: Employees rave about our Savings and Profit Sharing 401(k) program. This plan makes it possible for Shelter to share the profits of our company with employees and, depending on the annual profit, the first three percent of an employee's contribution could be matched as many as five times. Shelter may also provide an additional match on contributions of 4-6% of an employee's wages when the companies have sufficient income. Since 1986, Shelter has averaged more than a three times annual match of the first 3% of a participating employee's wages.

Additional Insurance Coverage

Life Insurance: Shelter provides Basic Group Life Insurance to all full-time employees. The amount of insurance is equal to one times your annual salary, with a maximum coverage of $400,000. Coverage is also available for a spouse and children.

Supplemental Life Insurance: Full-time employees may purchase supplemental life insurance equal to five times their annual salary, with a maximum coverage of $400,000 when combined with Basic Group Life. Coverage is also available for a spouse and children.

Group Voluntary Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance: Full-time employees may purchase optional low-cost accident coverage in multiples of $10,000 with a maximum of $750,000. Coverage is also available for family members.

Long Term Disability: After 90 days of continuous employment, full-time employees are provided with long-term disability insurance benefits at a percentage of their pay. The cost of long-term disability insurance is fully paid by Shelter.

Travel/Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance: Employees who travel on company business may receive coverage up to four times their annual salary, with a maximum coverage of $1,000,000. The cost of travel insurance is fully paid by Shelter.

Time Off

Vacation: From two months of service through one year, employees receive 9 days of paid vacation. From one to two years of service, employees receive 10 days of paid vacation. After two years of employment with Shelter, employees accrue additional days of vacation at an increasing rate based on their years of service which caps at 25 days at 25 years. 

Personal Leave: Full-time employees receive 16 hours of paid leave per calendar year. 

Sick Leave: Full-time employees receive 56 hours of paid sick leave January 1 of each year, and full-time employees may accumulate a maximum of 112 hours.

Short Term Disability: Employees prevented from working more than two consecutive days because of personal illness or injury may use Short Term Disability after one year of service. The duration and amount of pay is based off the employee's years of service. Short term disability may also be used for pregnancy and maternity leave.

Parental Leave: To promote and foster the family benefits of birth and adoption, Shelter provides up to two weeks of paid leave for employees who qualify.

Holidays: Shelter observes paid time off for nine holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and one floating holiday typically combined with either Independence Day or Christmas to create a four-day weekend.

Work/Life Balance

Flextime Scheduling: Shelter's alternative work scheduling allows varied starting times and work schedules. This flexibility helps employees address their personal needs and those of their families.

Dress for Your Day Dress Code: Shelter has implemented a "Dress for Your Day" policy intended to allow a more relaxed dress code when you have a work day that does not include meetings with customers, visitors and the public.

Vitality Wellness Program:  The Vitality wellness program is a comprehensive, interactive and personalized wellness program that makes it easy for you to live your healthiest life. The program provides biometric screenings, activity and educational challenges, and a points program that earns you rewards such as free fitness devices, gift cards and gym membership rebates.

Other Employee Perks

Cafeteria: Employees and visitors in our corporate office enjoy a full-service cafeteria for breakfast, lunch and snacks. 

Tuition Reimbursement: Full-time employees may pursue tuition reimbursement for successful completion of undergraduate and graduate degree coursework.

Credit Union: All employees, their spouses, and children living in the employee's residence are eligible to join the Shelter Insurance Federal Credit Union. The credit union provides savings accounts, share draft (checking) accounts, Christmas club accounts and auto and signature loans.

Scholarships for Children of Employees/Agents: The Shelter Insurance Foundation provides college scholarships for the children of agents and employees. Agents and employees are eligible for this benefit after two years of service and the child must meet certain eligibility criteria as well. A limited number of scholarships are available and a committee appointed by the foundation selects the recipients.

Employee Assistance Program: The Personal Assistance Services (PAS) program resources are available to Shelter agents, employees and their dependents. This innovative benefit is designed to provide confidential assistance with work and life balance and other personal matters at no cost to the employee.
