Diversity Within Our Company

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote “The time is always right to do what is right.” This quote is particularly appropriate for Shelter Insurance® since integrity is at the core of our brand promise.  As Shelter’s President & CEO, I will continue our focus on doing the right thing for all aspects of our business – especially our diversity and inclusion efforts.

In 2018, we adopted the Principles of Community, a statement of our commitment to Inclusive Excellence. The principles outline our affirmation of the inherent dignity and value of every person, the value of human diversity and the rejection of all forms of prejudice and discrimination. I support these principles and re-affirm Shelter’s ongoing commitment to them.

Shelter has made great strides in the areas of diversity and inclusion, starting with our Diversity Internship Program. For more than 35 years, Shelter has mentored talented individuals through this program, and we’re fortunate some chose to build their careers with us. We continue to look for ways to enhance and expand this program.

We continue to expand our training and development opportunities for employees and agents. We facilitated dialogue sessions to explore an understanding of racism and its impact on employees. We created a program called Building Inclusive Companies in 2020 and have started sharing this training opportunity with employees.

Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) continue to grow and enhance Shelter’s diversity and inclusion efforts. We encourage employee participations in the Emerging Professionals Network (EPN), the Shelter Women’s Advocacy Group (SWAG), the Multicultural Group (MCG), the Happy Work Team (HWT) and Ra11y. You may click on the links provided to learn more about each group and the opportunities each offers for personal and professional growth. For more information about our overall Diversity and Inclusion efforts, please review the Diversity Annual Report.

These are only a few of our diversity and inclusion initiatives. While I am very proud of our efforts to date, we still have much to do. This ongoing process will make us a stronger company. Working together, we can achieve more.

Our Vision

We envision Shelter as a naturally diverse and inclusive workplace that:

  • Provides products and services that create value to an ever increasing multicultural market.
  • Appreciates people for their value and contributions and not for their appearance.
  • Creates an inclusive environment, where people feel respected by and connected to one another. This environment supports contributions and the integration of diverse levels of knowledge, experience, and perspective to the creation and accomplishment of our defined goals.
  • Encourages employees within Shelter to pursue new approaches that increase diversity and inclusion in their processes.
  • Enjoys community partnership strategies and recognition for diversity achievements.
  • Builds local, national and industry awareness from diversity groups as a great place to work.

Our Mission

At Shelter, we are committed to bringing together the diverse perspectives of all agents, employees and community partners. Utilizing their different perspectives creates an inclusive environment where everyone can contribute to our dynamic organization. This enhances our ability to serve diverse customer needs and meet our business objectives.

Our Values

As a diverse and inclusive company we value:

  • A real (valid, authentic, true) diversity commitment
  • All walks of life; demonstrated at all levels of the organization
  • Performance and collaborative engagement where different ideas and opinions are welcomed
